The Software Engineering Institute (SEI) is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) operated by Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Arlington, Virginia. The institute helps advance software engineering principles and practices, serving as a national resource in software engineering, computer security, and process improvement. SEI works closely with defense and government organizations, industry, and academia to continually improve software-intensive systems.
The SEI's core purposes are to help organizations improve software engineering capabilities, advance cybersecurity methods and technologies, and bring the discipline of software engineering to AI systems. The institute conducts groundbreaking software research, development, and transition for the US Government. Its divisions include the AI Division, which conducts research in applied artificial intelligence and engineering challenges related to building AI-enabled systems, and the CERT Cyber Risk and Resilience Directorate, which enables organizations to achieve operational resilience through research in operational risk and measurement tools.
